Leon McCutcheon (b 1959) makes watercolor portraits that combine his interests in fashion, jazz, politics, and disability justice with his memories of growing up in South Carolina. His paintings sometimes toy with subjects’ eyes – painting them fully black or leaving them entirely white – adding a ghostly presence to the recognizable likenesses. Leon lives in Harlem.
