Emma Singer
Hello, this is Emma Singer, the current artist in residence at Summertime!
The trees are blooming, the outdoor table is set up, and I’m reporting live from the bathroom in the back. Somehow I feel like the luckiest little guy in the whole world!
I’ve spent the past few months settling into the space at 145 Ainslie. Surrounded by Jenn Quinones, Raquel Albarran and Josephine Noel’s spectacular, intimate art, I feel enveloped in the lush & divine energy that I’ve begun to realize is just always what you get at Summertime.
I have big dreams of giant inflatable legs, moving quilts, and tchotchkes shows, all of which are in the works! But much of my first month was remarkable because of all the friends, family, and community I’ve been able to host at the Summertime studio. So far it’s witnessed the birth of a true-to-size Sea Slug Sircus, some luxurious co-working sessions with members of the Brooklyn Quilters Guild, and lots of quality time with the teensiest tiniest dog in the whole world. Not to mention some beautiful prep days for Pussypaws Puppetry’s show Pussypaws Pleasure Faire.
Also, here’s what I’m reading!
“It did not intuitively make sense to me to say that the sick are weak because being sick is fucking metal. It has nothing to do with weakness and everything to do with blood, shit, agony, vomit, pus, and death.” I return to this Johanna Hedva quote, and their essay Sick Woman Theory, a lot and now they’ve given us a whole book!? Reading and weeping and grinning ear to ear.
Picked up a copy of SICK Magazine at Quimby’s on Metropolitan! It is beautiful to behold and full of essays and art that I’ve been sloooowly savoring and working my way through.
Stay tuned for more to come. Excited to keep soaking up the magical Summertime energy!
xoxo,
Emma
